会議室を予約する
社内の会議室を予約するため、内線で担当部署に依頼する際のやりとりです。
- Clark:
- Hello, this is Mike Clark of the sales department. Can I talk with someone in charge of making arrangements for a meeting room?
- Shimizu:
- This is Yoko Shimizu, and I take care of that.
- Clark:
- Thank you. I'd like to book a meeting room that can seat twelve people on the morning of May 25.
- Shimizu:
- OK. Let me check the availability ... Well, the only room that's available is Room D, which can hold up to fifteen people.
- Clark:
- All right. Does the room have a projector?
- Shimizu:
- I'm sorry, but the rooms with projectors are both reserved already.
- Clark:
- Oh ... That's going to be a problem.
- Shimizu:
- Well, I'll ask the people who reserved the rooms if they could switch to a room without a projector.
- Clark:
- I'd appreciate that. We're going to have some clients at the meeting and we can't change the date or time.
- Shimizu:
- All right. I'll call you back when I figure this out.

- これは「会議室の予約を担当している方とお話しできますか」という意味です。someone in charge of ～は「～を担当している方」。Can Iの代わりにI’d like to ～「～したいのですが」も使えます。
- I take care of that.
- 「私がそれを担当しています」という意味で、I’m in charge of that.も同じ意味を表します。なお、「担当している」と言うと、現在進行形を使ってしまいそうですが、I am taking care of that.「今、ある1つの問題を担当している」と意味になるので注意しましょう。
- I’d like to book a meeting room that can seat twelve people on the morning of May 25.
- I’d like to book a meeting room.は「会議室を予約したいのですが」という表現。bookの代わりにreserveを使うこともできます。ここでは関係代名詞を使ったa meeting room that can seat twelve people「12名収容できる会議室」で、収容人数の希望を伝えています。that can ～の代わりにwith a capacity for twelve peopleを使うこともできます。
- The only room that’s available is Room D, which can hold up to fifteen people.
- 会議室などの部屋が「空いている」ことを表すにはavailableを使います。ここではthe only room that’s available「唯一空いている部屋」がRoom Dであり、さらにその部屋についてwhich can hold up to fifteen people「最大15名収容できる」と説明を加えています。このholdは「（部屋が人を）収容する」、up to ～は上限を示して「～まで」という意味です。
- The rooms with projectors are both reserved already.
- ＜主語＋are already reserved＞は「～はすでに予約でいっぱいです」という意味ですが、この文のようにalreadyを文の最後に置くこともあります。reservedの代わりにbookedやtakenも使えます。
- I’ll ask the people who reserved the rooms if they could switch to a room without a projector.
- 部屋の変更が可能かどうかをたずねてみる、と伝える表現です。＜I’ll ask＋人＋if ～＞は「（人）に～かどうかをたずねてみる」はよく使うフレーズなので、覚えておきましょう。
